On Wednesday, the European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics kick off in the Hungarian capital Budapest! It’s the third time Budapest will organise this event, after successful editions in both 1999 and 2017.  

The Hungarian capital will welcome 40 countries. A total of 303 gymnasts will take to the stage: 203 seniors and 100 juniors. The participants field is nothing short of spectacular!

Who to watch?

Bulgarian superstar Boryana Kaleyn is looking to defend her all-around title. She will face stiff competition from reigning World Champion Darja Varfolomeev (GER), former World Champion Sofia Raffaeli (ITA), 2022 European Champion Daria Atamanov (ISR), Ukraine’s leading lady Viktoriia Onopriienko, Bulgarian starlet Stiliana Nikolova, and the list goes on. The host nation Hungary will be represented by Fanni Pigniczki and Hanna Wiesner.

Special mention goes out to former junior stand-outs Liliana Lewinska (POL), Elvira Krasnobaeva (BUL) and Taisiia Onofriichuk (UKR) who will be making their first senior appearance at a European Championships.

In the group competition, we look forward to an exciting battle between an impressive line-up of 19 groups: Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Spain, Finland, France, Great Britain, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Türkiye and Ukraine.

And it’s not all about the reign over Europe. The last quota places for the Olympics are at stake: one for individuals and one for groups.

Competition format

Senior Individuals 1 to 3 gymnasts can compete per National Federation, presenting  maximum 8 exercises. If a NF participates with only 1 gymnast, she must present an exercise with all 4 apparatus and does not qualify for the team ranking. The best 3 scores count towards the all-around ranking. The best 24 advance to the All-Around final, plus 1 gymnast from the host nation if not yet qualified.  In the final, the total of the 4 scores determine the ranking. The best 8 per apparatus compete in the Apparatus finals.

Senior Group Groups perform to routines in qualifications: 5 Hoops and 3 Ribbons & 2 Balls. The combined score determines the All-Around ranking. The best 8 groups per apparatus advance to the apparatus finals.  

Team ranking Senior The winner of the Team Competition is determined by combining the results of all 8 senior individual routines plus the 2 senior group routines.

Junior Individuals 1 - 4 gymnasts can compete per National federation, presenting a maximum of 4 routines. If a NF participates with only 1 gymnast, she has to present an exercise with all 4 apparatus and does not qualify for the team ranking. The result of all 4 scores determines the team ranking. The best 8 gymnasts per apparatus advance to the Apparatus Finals.

Olympic qualification The Olympic qualification for individual gymnasts will take place in the individual all-around qualification competition on May 23 + May 24, based on 4 scores. Gymnasts wanting to participate in the Olympic qualification must compete in all 4 routines. The Olympic qualification for groups will take place in the group all-around competition on May 25. For information regarding the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification System please refer to the document “Olympic Qualification System Paris 2024 RG” published on the FIG website.

Tie break rules In case of a tie at any position at the end of any competition, the tie breaking rules set out in the TR FIG will apply (TR FIG, Section 3, Article 7).

On Thursday, the European Championships in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics kick off in the Fiera di Rimini.

Who to watch?

Host Italy are sending their A-team: European Champions Alice and Asia D’Amato, Manila Esposito, Elisa Iorio and Angela Andreoli. Their main competition for team glory will come from 2023 World bronze medalists France (Morgane Osyssek-Reimer, Coline Devillard, Lorette Charpy, Marine Boyer and Ming Van Eijken), defending European Champions, World and Olympic medalists Great Britain (Abigail Martin, Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Becky Downie and Ruby Evans), and the other Olympic qualifiers Netherlands (Vera Van Pol, Elisabeth Geurts, Tisha Volleman, Floor Slooff and Lieke Wevers) and Romania (Ana Barbosu, Lilia Cosman, Amalia Ghigoarta, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea and Maria Ceplinschi).

Furthermore, Olympic Champion on uneven bars Nina Derwael returns to a Europeans for the first time since 2018, and after injuring her shoulder just before her home Worlds last year. The  Belgian superstar secured her ticket to Paris Olympics on beam at the World Cup series while 3 other Rimini participants, Austria’s Charlize Moerz , Bulgaria’s Valentina Georgieva, and Spain’s Laura Casabuena also clinched their Olympic entry tickets.

Another name to watch is former junior standout Helen Kevric, the 2022 junior European all-around and 2022 and 2023 EYOF Champion, as the German talent makes her senior Europeans debut. Competition format

A Senior team consists of 3 - 5 gymnasts, of which up to 4 compete on each apparatus. The 3 best scores on each apparatus are added together to make the total score for the Team on that apparatus. If a Federation does not have a sufficient number of gymnasts for a full team, it is possible to participate with Individual gymnasts.

A separate All-Around Final result list will be produced including the 24 gymnasts with the highest ranking obtained. A maximum of 2 gymnasts per Federation will be taken into consideration. The results from the Senior Qualifying competition will determine the 2024 European All-Around medalists.

A Junior team consists of 3 - 5 gymnasts, of which up to 4 compete on each apparatus. The 3 best scores on each apparatus are added together to make the total score for the Team on that apparatus. If a Federation does not have a sufficient number of gymnasts for a full team, it is possible to participate with Individual gymnasts. The results from the Junior Qualifying competition will determine the 2024 Junior European Team and All-around medalists.

The 8 highest ranked gymnasts on each apparatus from the Qualifying Competition will qualify for the respective Apparatus Final. A maximum of two gymnasts per federation will be allowed in the finals.

The 8 best Teams from the Senior Qualifying Competition will participate in the Senior Team Final. The teams consist of 3 to 5 gymnasts, of which 3 compete on each apparatus. The 3 scores on each apparatus are added and make the total result.

Not only continental glory is at stake, the event also serves as the last Olympic qualifier, with one ticket available for the highest eligible all-arounder in the senior qualification round.

From Wednesday to Sunday, Europe’s finest gymnasts will gather in the Italian coastal town of Rimini to compete in the 2024 edition of the European Championships in Men’s Artistic Gymnastics.

The 37 participating national federations will be represented by 173 seniors and 129 juniors. And the line-up is nothing short of spectacular!

Taking place from 24 to 28 April 2024, the battle for continental glory promises to be fierce. And the event also marks the last big test before this summer’s Olympic Games.

Defending Champions Adem Asil (TUR - All-Around and Rings), Rhys McClenaghan (IRL - Pommel Horse), Artur Davtyan (ARM - Vault), Illia Kovtun (UKR – Parallel Bars) and Tin Srbic (CRO - Horizontal Bar) are all listed, in addition to reigning World Champions Artem Dolgopyat (ISR – Floor), Jake Jarman (GBR - Vault) and Lukas Dauser (GER – Parallel Bars), and legends like European title rings record holder Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE), vault & rings superstar Igor Radivilov (UKR), Samir Ait Said (FRA), Filip Ude (CRO), among many others.

We also welcome back some big names, like 2022 All-Around Champion Joe Fraser (GBR) and the 2015 and 2017 winner Oleg Verniaiev (UKR) and 2022 Rings winner Ibrahim Colak (TUR).

Hosts Italy have their hopes set on Yumin Abbadini, Lorenzo Minh Casali, Matteo Levantesi, Marco Lodadio, Mario Macchiati and Salvatore Maresca. These guys won the team gold for the first time last year. Can they successfully defend their crown in front of a home audience?  

Aside from continental glory, there remains 1 Olympic quota place to be earned. This will go to the highest eligible all-arounder in the qualification rounds.

If a Federation does not have a sufficient number of gymnasts for a full team, it is possible to participate with Individual gymnasts.

A separate All-Around Final result list will be produced including the 24 gymnasts with the highest ranking obtained. A maximum of 2 gymnasts per Federation will be taken into consideration. The results from the Senior Qualifying competition will determine the 2024 European All-Around Champions and medallists.

Trampoline – Individual and Synchronised

Defending European Champion and reigning World Champion Bryony Page (GBR) is facing competition from 2019 European Games Champion Léa Labrousse, 2022 junior European Champion Silvia Coluzzi (ITA), Lina Sjoeberg (SWE), recent Olympic qualifiers Noemi Romero (ESP), Seljan Mahsudova (AZE) and Luba Golovina (GEO); Svitlana Malkova (UKR), among many others. Page and Isabelle Songhurst are defending the synchro gold. At the World Cup in Baku in February, Georgians Anano Apakidze and Marian Ragimovi earned the bronze medal while Germany’s Aurelia Eisloeffel and Maya Moeller clinched bronze last weekend in Cottbus.

All European finalists of the 2023 Worlds are lining up: Gabriel Albuquerque (POR), Zak Perzamanos (GBR), Benny Wizani (AUT) and Pedro Ferreira (POR), as will the defending European Champion, France’s Allan Morante.  Other names to watch: Diogo Abreu (POR), Mykola Prostorov (UKR), Julien Chartier (FRA) and Andrew Stamp (GBR). In synchro, all eyes will be on World Champions Caio Lauxtermann and Fabian Vogel (GER), France’s Morgan Demiro-o-Domiro and Pierre Gouzou, Portugal’s Diogo Abreu and Pedro Ferreira and Great Britain’s Zak Perzamanos and Corey Walkes.

The competition in Guimaraes promises to be thrilling!

Double Mini-Trampoline

The reigning World Champion, Spain’s Melania Rodriguez, is aiming to earn the European title that she won as a junior in 2018. Her main challenge will come from British and Portuguese athletes. Great Britain is sending all four of their World Champion team: Molly McKenna, Ruth Shevelan, Kirsty Way and Bethany Williamson while the host nation have lined up two of its Vice World Champion team: Diana Gago, 2023 World Individual bronze medallist, and Alexandra Garcia.

The men’s competition will feature Vice World Champion David Franco (ESP) and bronze medallist Tiago Sampaio Romao (POR), our 2022 SmartScoring Shooting Star Daniel Schmidt (GER), junior stand-out Brent Deklerck (BEL), and Great Britain’s Omo Aikeremiokha and Lewis Gosling.

Tumbling

The biggest names in the women’s competition include European and World Champion Candy Brière-Vetillard and her France teammates Emilie Wambotte, Manon Morancais and Maelle Dumitru-Marin, Great Britain’s Vice World Champion Megan Kealy, World bronze medallist Saskia Servini, Naana Oppon and 2022 World Champion Comfort Yeates; Baku World Cup silver medallist Alexandra Efraioglou (GRE), and for Belgium, 2021 European Champion Tachina Peeters and World finalists Evi Milh and Louise Van Regenmortel.

At the World Cup event in Baku, Individual and Team World Champion Mikhail Malkin and his teammate Adil Hajizada clinched gold and silver, with Portugal’s Vasco Peso in third place. Can we expect a rematch in Guimaraes? It will have to include Great Britain’s men, who have won every title possible, including gold at the previous Europeans and silver at last year’s Worlds. This year, we’ll see Jaydon Paddock, William Cowen, Kristof Willerton and Fred Teague in action. Another powerhouse, Denmark, fields 2023 World team bronze medallists Martin Abildgaard and Magnus Lindholmer, and their teammates Johannes Soemod and Alexander Bredvig.

Competition format

The competition programme in the disciplines TRA, DMT and TUM consists of a qualifying competition (Qualification Q1 with two exercises and Semi-Final Q2 with one exercise) and a final for TRA, two final rounds F1 and F2 for DMT and TUM.  

TRA, DMT and TUM Team competitions consist of Qualification (Q1 – two exercises) and a Final (one exercise). If there are less than 4 teams for a team competition, the team competition will be cancelled.

The winner of each competition group will qualify to Semi-Final (Q2) or to the Final.

Participation: The number of gymnasts who will go forward from Qualification (Q1) to Semi-Finals (Q2) depends on the number of entries in the nominative registrations:

• 1 to 31 entries No Semi-Final (Q2)
• 32 to 47 entries Semi-Final (Q2) with 16 gymnasts/ pairs
• 48+ entries Semi-Final (Q2) with 24 gymnasts / pairs

Only 3 gymnasts / 2 pairs per member federation may compete in the Semi-Final (Q2). The gymnasts / pairs start the Semi-Final (Q2) with a score of zero. The winner of each competition group will qualify to the Final.

The finals determine the European Champions. Participation:

• A maximum of 8 individual gymnasts per discipline and age category, men and women (maximum 2 per NF).
• In DMT and TUM Final 4 gymnasts qualify from F1 to F2.
• A maximum of 8 synchro pairs per age category, men and women (maximum 1 per NF).
• The top 5 teams in TRA, DMT and TUM per age category, men and women (3 gymnasts per team).

If there are less than 12 entries in a category, only 6 will proceed to the final. The winner is the gymnast / pair with the highest score in Finals (in F2 in DMT and TUM), in Team Finals the winner is the team with the highest sum of ranking points.

After 5 intense days of voting, the 2023 European ‘Gymnasts of the Year’ have been crowned!

In the category ‘Male Gymnast of the Year’, tumbling sensation Mikhail Malkin (AZE) triumphed with a total of 226,339 votes:

In the category ‘Female Gymnast of the Year’, European All-Around Champion in Rhythmic Gymnastics Boryana Kaleyn (BUL) won with 95,673 votes:

In the category ‘Team of the Year’, Türkiye’s history-writing Men’s Artistic Gymnastics team won with 146,444 votes:

In the category ‘Outstanding Performance’, Israel’s Daria Atamanov claimed the victory with 101,127 votes:

Antalya’s Gymnastics Center witnessed breathtaking performances today as the senior fought for eternal glory in the 13^th European Aerobics Championships.

Starting off with  star-studded Individual Women’s final, where the 2021 World Champion Ayse Onbasi (TUR), the 2022 World Champion Anastasiia Kurashvili (UKR) and the 2021 junior European Champion Maelys Lenclos (FRA) all battled for the medals. The race for gold proved tight as Maelys Lenclos posted the highest execution for the win! Kurashvili and Borislava Ivanova (BUL) both scored 20.400. Here the execution determined the ranking: silver for Kurashvili and bronze for Ivanova.

Third in 2021 at home in Italy, top qualifier Davide Nacci stunned the audience with an incredible exercise to the theme of ‘The Hunchback of the Notre-Dame’, complemented by his beautiful matching outfit. His reward? The European title! In second place, Nacci’s best friend Francesco Sebastio who got the crowd on its feet courtesy of his Elvis Presley imitation. 2021 World Champion Miquel Mane (ESP) clinched the bronze in a tie-breaker with Romania’s Leonard Manta, and just 0.050 of Portugal’s Rui Cansado.

We witnessed another tale of successful juniors turning into senior Champions here in the Mixed Pairs final. Bulgarian duo Borislava Ivanova and Hristo Manolov embraced the spotlight, comfortably transitioning from 2021 junior Champions to 2023 senior European Champions. 2 tenths behind them, Italians Lucrezia Rexhepi and Matteo Falera gracefully grabbed the silver, while Romania’s Darius Branda and Daria Mihaiu were delighted with the bronze.

France continued its winning mood in Trios, again with Maelys Lenclos in its ranks. Lenclos teamed up with Clara Lestruhaut and Victoria Trosset to produce a routine that earned a whopping 3.647 in difficulty, the highest of this final. Combine that with great execution and artistry, and the gold returns to France. Securely in silver medal position we see one of the Romanian trios, featuring David Gavrilovici, Leonard Manta and Claudia Ristea. Italy claims yet another medal, a bronze this time for Sara Cutini, Davide Nacci and Francesco Sebastio.

Just moments later, Cutini, Nacci and Sebastio, joined by Anna Bullo and Matteo Falera (ITA) excelled yet again, this time cruising to victory in the Groups final, acing their artistry and execution marks. Making a name for themselves here, Finland took the silver medal, courtesy of Nea Hukkanen, Nea Kivelae, Adeelia Koponen, Hilda Laaksonen and Nanne Teinikivi. Dora Akoshegyi, Fanni Csitkovics, Fruzsina Fejer, Zoltan Locsei and Andras Agoston Mikulecz combined their efforts to bring the bronze back to Hungary.

Last but not least, the Aerobic Dance final gave the gymnasts the opportunity to impressive the audience. Top choreography and intense enthusiasm on display and a perfect way to end a wonderful event. Hungary claimed the title, a tenth ahead of Romania, with Italy in the bronze medal position.

With these finals, this 13^th edition of the Aerobics Europeans comes to an end. Thank you to all the gymnasts for their enthusiasm and dedication, and to the Turkish Gymnastics Federation for the wonderful organisation!

At the conclusion of the 13^th European Championships in Aerobic Gymnastics, Aida Shaliyeva, Project Manager of our Global Partner SmartScoring, presented the SmartScoring Shooting Star award to Greece’s Vasileia-Faidra Diamanti and Romania’s David Gavrilovici.

Started in 2018, this award aims to put a gymnast with an exceptional story in the spotlight, someone who is an inspiration for the future generation of gymnasts and the general public alike.

Vasileia-Faidra Diamanti started in Rhythmic Gymnastics at 4 as a way to consume her endless energy. At 8, her then coach sent Faidra to the Aerobics team. Times were difficult in Greece back then due to financial crisis. Faidra's father, with whom she had a special bond, left Greece when Faidra was only 10 years old. Her mother had to work long hours, go abroad almost every summer to work, so her grandpa was the one who drove her to training. After her first national championships, her coach decided that she should take part in a competition abroad. She did, and she won the silver medal, despite being the youngest participant. This made her believe in herself and work hard for the best possible result. Overcoming injuries and lack of resources, Faidra claimed the silver medal in junior Individual Women at the 2022 World Championships. In Antalya, she competed in the senior category for the first time. If you ask her today ''Would you do that again?'', she would answer without any doubt or hesitation that she would.

David Gavrilovici is a highly successful competitor with several European and World medals. Unfortunately, the Romanian star suffered a knee injury in May 2022 which required cruciate ligament surgery, causing him to miss both the World Championships and the World Games. The easiest thing to do would have been to retire, as he is currently studying for a Masters in Banking and Insurance and is also a coach, but he wanted to continue and show the world that he still has something to say as an athlete. After a very rigorous recovery programme, Gavrilovici is making his comeback at these Europeans, participating in no less than three categories: Trio, Group and Aerobic Dance.

From Friday to Sunday, all eyes will be on Antalya (TUR) where Europe’s finest Aerobic gymnasts will compete in the 13^th edition of the European Championships in Aerobic Gymnastics.

21 National Federations have registered a grand total of 397 gymnasts: 183 seniors and 214 juniors. The participants have the opportunity to compete in Individual Men / Women, Mixed Pairs, Trios, Groups, Aero Dance and Aero Step.

Who to watch?

Host nation Türkiye will be well represented by 2021 World Champion and 2022 silver medallist Ayse Begum Onbasi who will face stiff competition from reigining World Champion Anastasiia Kurashvili (UKR). Kurashvili and mixed pair partner Stanislav Halaida were recently crowned World Cup series winners. 2021 World Champion and 2022 silver medallist Miquel Mane (ESP) earned top honours in this year’s World Cup series ahead of Portugal’s Rui Cansado.

Winning medals as juniors in the last edition of the Aerobics Europeans, Maelys Lenclos (FRA),  Lola Lawrence (GBR),  Lucrezia Rexhepi (ITA), Borislava Ivanova and Hristo Manolov (BUL) now all compete as seniors and are challenging for the medals.

Lenclos and longtime partners Clara Lestruhaut and Victoria Trosset clinched the Trios World Cup series victory over Davide Nacci, Francesco Sebastio and Sara Cutini (ITA). All three Frech ladies then joined Juliette Leblanc and Yaelle Winona Mathieu to prevail in the Groups category as well.

Of course, all gymnasts are looking to excel in Antalya! We wish every single gymnast loads of success, supporting them to achieve their goals.

Competition format

National Federations may enter a maximum of two units per category for IM, IW, MP, TR and one per category for GR, AD, AS  in the qualification rounds.

The top 8 proceed to the finals. If there are less than 12 entries per category, only 6 proceed. As only 5 units registered for Aerobic Step, only Qualifications with Medals will take place.

The finals start from mark of zero, the units with the highest score (in accordance with tie-break rules) in each category are declared European Champions.

To participate in the Team Ranking, federations must participate with at least one unit in the qualifications of the following categories: Individual Men and/or Individual Women, Mixed Pair, Trio, Group o Aerobic Dance or Aerobic Step. The team ranking list will be established by adding the 5 best places (rankings). The Federation with the lowest total of ranking places will be declared European Team Champion.

From Wednesday to Sunday, all eyes will be on Varna’s Palace of Culture and Sports where Europe’s finest Acrobatic gymnasts will compete in the 31^st edition of the European Championships in Acrobatic Gymnastics.

Varna will welcome 105 senior and 144 junior gymnasts from 21 countries. Come and support them, and witness the antics of our legendary mascot Luigi, at Varna’s Palace of Culture and Sports. Entry is free-of-charge!

Unfortunately, the Israeli delegation was forced to withdraw last minute due to the attacks in their country.

Who to watch?

Ones to watch in the senior category include the mixed pair winners of this year’s World Cup stages in Maia and Rzeszow Aghasif Rahimov and Raziya Seyidli (AZE). Belgium’s new women’s group Sofie Jaeken, Lauren Verbrugghe and Mirte Vercauteren won both in Rzeszow and Puurs. They will be challenged by Carolina Marques, Joana Pinto & Eduarda Portella (POR) and Elina Kozachanska, Karina Ostrovska & Alina Puhach (UKR). In Puurs, we witnessed the victory of women’s pair Monica Lima and Maria Marvao (POR). Germany’s European and World medallist Daniel Blintsov is on the roster too, now partnering with Diana Lust. In the men’s group competition, we expect a thrilling battle between Great Britain, Ukraine and Portugal.

Competition format

Competitors may enter Balance and/or Dynamic individual competitions. The score of both qualification routines determines the all-around qualification ranking. In the all-around final, all units perform their combined routine.

After the Individual All-Around final at the 39^th European Championships in Rhythmic Gymnastics in Baku (AZE), Kamran Ramazanov, CEO of our global partner SmartScoring presented the SmartScoring Shooting star award to Hungary’s Fanni Pigniczki.

Started in 2018, this award aims to put a gymnast with an exceptional story in the spotlight, someone who is an inspiration for the future generation of gymnasts and the general public alike.

Fanni Pigniczki started doing rhythmic gymnastics at the age of 5. It simply was love at first sight.

At 12, she joined the member of the Hungarian National Team, competing with the junior group at her first European Championships in Vienna. The following year, in 2014, she was selected to compete with ball and ribbon as an individual gymnast at the Junior European Championship in Baku, and in 2015 she was competing again in the group. She is the first Hungarian gymnast who competed at three junior European Championships. Her first European Championships as a senior was at home in Hungary. Since then, she participated as an individual in all European Championships with Baku marking her 10^th participation.

Fanni’s continuous strive for excellence has earned her many accolades. In 2021, she qualified to the Tokyo Olympics by taking the continental spot, becoming the first Hungarian in over 20 years to earn an Olympic berth. Last year, Fanni became the first Hungarian rhythmic gymnast to win a medal at the World Games when she won the bronze with hoop and ball. One month later she became the first Hungarian to win a World Cup medal, adding to that collection this year as well. Her motto? "I almost never focus on medals or who I want to beat. I just want to get better.” And she’s just getting better and better.
