Preview of the 2021 European Championships in Aerobic Gymnastics in Pesaro (ITA)

On Friday competition will begin at Pesaro’s Vitrifrigo Arena. 161 senior and 164 junior gymnasts will be representing the 22 participating Federations.

Europe’s best junior and senior gymnasts in Aerobic Gymnastics will battle for the continental titles and you can follow it all live!

Who to watch?

Headlining the impressive field are recently crowned World Champions Ayse Onbasi (TUR), Miquel Mane (ESP), Tihomir Barotev, Antonio Papazov and Darina Pashova (BUL) and Gabriel Bocser, Madalina Cucu, David Gavrilovici, Mihai Popa and Daniiel Tavoc (ROU). The defending European Champions on the roster are Roman Semenov (RUS) and Daniel Bali, Fanni Mazacs and Balazs Farkas (HUN).

Competition format

These European Championships are for juniors (15 to 17 years old) and seniors (18+). Both compete in 6 categories: individual men (IM), individual women (IW), mixed pairs (MP), trios (TR), groups (GR) and Aero Dance (AD).

The qualifications determine the team standing and the finalists. The top 8 advance to the final with a maximum of 2 per country except for groups and Aero Dance where only 1 per country can qualify.

The team ranking list will be established by adding the 5 best rankings obtained during the qualifications in the following categories: Individual Men or Individual Women, Mixed pairs, Trios, Groups and Aero Dance. The Federation with the lowest number of points is declared Team European Champion.

2019 World and European all-around champion Nikita Nagornyy (RUS) has set the standard of expectations in the lead-up to the Olympic Games as he qualified in first place for the all-around final. Nagornyy also advances to five out of the six available apparatus finals: floor, pommel horse, rings, vault and parallel bars.

The Russian all-arounder competed strong across all six apparatus to finish with a total of 87.097 points. Nagornny’s teammates David Belyavskiy (85.398) and Aleksandr Kartsev (84.731) finished in second and third. Kartsev won’t advance to the all-around final due to the two-per-country rule, but with his score he placed first among the eligible gymnasts to obtain a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics. However, this will depend on the World Cup series were one more competition needs to take place in Doha and where teammate Vladyslav Poliashov is currently second on parallel bars with the maximum score of 90 behind . Turkey’s Adem Asil, who finished in fourth place in the all-around, is the second eligible gymnast and is sure of his ticket to Tokyo following a stunning all-around performance to score 84.032 points. Nicola Bartolini of Italy is next in line. The FIG will officially communicate the Olympic qualifiers after the conclusion of the World Cup series.

Although top all-around qualifier Nagornyy secured himself five apparatus finals, he didn’t qualify in the top spot in any of the events. Teammate Kirill Prokopev qualified in first for the final on floor exercise (15.066). 2016 Olympic rings champion Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) was the top qualifier on still rings with a massive score of 15.366 to finish well ahead of Italy’s Salvatore Maresca (14.933). 2018 European pommel horse champion Rhys McClenaghan (IRL) qualified in first place for the pommel horse final, scoring a superb 14.766 points while Andrey Medvedev from Israel took the top spot on vault (14.666). German gymnasts Lukas Dauser and Andreas Toba took first place on parallel bars (15.166) and horizontal bar (14.433), respectively.

The competition continues tomorrow with the all-around finals for both men and women.

On Wednesday competition will begin at Basel’s St Jakobshalle. It’s the fifth time Switzerland will host the Artistic Gymnastics European Championships: the Men’s event was held in Bern in 1975, in Lausanne in 1990 and 2008 and, most recently, the 2016 Europeans in Bern for both men and women.

38 Federations are travelling to Basel to challenge for the continental titles. A total of 268 gymnasts are scheduled to compete: 109 women and 159 men.

Who to watch?

In the women’s competition, we look forward to seeing 2015 European all-around Champion Giulia Steingruber (SUI), 2019 European all-around Champion Melanie de Jesus dos Santos (FRA), 2019 European Games Champion Angelina Melnikova and her teammate, the 2019 junior World all-around Champion, Viktoria Listunova (RUS), 2020 European Champions Zsofia Kovacs (HUN) and Larisa Iordache (ROU) and many more.

The men’s field will be equally experienced, with on the roster: 2019 European all-around Champion Nikita Nagornyy (RUS), high bar super star Epke Zonderland (NED), double Olympic Champion Max Whitlock (GBR), home crowd favourite Pablo Braegger (SUI), Greek Lord of the Rings Eleftherios Petrounias, Ireland’s Rhys McClenaghan, Lithuania’s trailblazer Robert Tvorogal, Turkey’s first European gold medallists Ibrahim Colak and Ferhat Arican, Romanian legend Marian Dragulescu, and the list goes on. Junior standout Ilia Kovtun (UKR) will make his senior debut in Basel.

Of course, all gymnasts are looking to excel in Basel after a long period of uncertainty and we wish every single gymnast loads of success.

Competition format

Each country can enter 6 male and 4 female gymnasts with a maximum of 4 gymnasts each per apparatus competing.

The 24 gymnasts with the highest ranking obtained in the qualifying competition advance to the All-Around Final with a maximum of 2 gymnasts per country. The 8 highest ranked gymnasts in the qualifying competition per apparatus advance to the Apparatus Finals, again with a maximum of 2 gymnasts per country / final.

2 Olympic quota for men and 2 for women will be determined based on the results of the all-around qualification competition. For the Tokyo 2020 Qualification, the handling of eligibility and results is the responsibility of FIG.

On Wednesday competition will begin at Mersin’s Gymnastics Hall. It’s the first time Turkey will host the Men’s Artistic Gymnastics European Championships!

20 Federations are travelling to Turkey to challenge for the continental titles. A total of 127 gymnasts are scheduled to compete: 65 juniors and 62 seniors.

Who to watch?

The field includes stars like Ukraine’s Petro Pakhniuk, Igor Radivilov and 2019 EYOF Champion Ilia Kovtun, Croatians Tin Srbic, Robert Seligman and Filip Ude, David Vecsernyes (HUN), Israeli powerhouses Artem Dolgopyat, Alexander Shatilov and Andrey Medvedev, Romanian superstar Marian Dragulescu, pommel horse specialist Saso Bertoncelj (SLO) and many more. The Turkish hopes lie on the shoulders of their nation’s first ever World Champion Ibrahim Colak, Ferhat Arican and Ahmet Onder.

In the junior qualifications, 3 to 5 gymnasts make up the team. 4 gymnasts can compete on each apparatus with the 3 best scores counting towards the team total. The final standing after the qualification day crowns the team medallists. The 24 highest ranked gymnasts, with a maximum of 2 gymnasts per country, advance to the all-around final.  The top 8 per apparatus, with a maximum of 2 per country, advance to the apparatus finals.

In the senior qualifications, 3 to 5 gymnasts make up the team, 4 gymnasts can compete on each apparatus with the 3 best scores counting towards the team total. The top 6 teams advance to the team final where 3 gymnasts will compete on each apparatus with all scores counting. The top 8 per apparatus, with a maximum of 2 per country, advance to the apparatus finals.

The first European Champions of 2020 were crowned today in Kyiv (UKR) as the senior groups performed their 3 hoops and 2 pairs of clubs routines to conclude their all-around battle. The junior individuals competed with clubs and ribbons for a place on the team podium and in the apparatus finals.

After day 1, the group of Azerbaijan led with half a point advantage over Israel who produced a stunning hoops & clubs routine to clinch their first European all-around title. Ukraine overtook Estonia in an exciting battle for bronze.

The joint effort of the host nation’s senior group and junior individuals ensured the victory in the team competition was theirs, narrowly edging Israel by just 0.250. Azerbaijan grabbed the bronze medal.

Ukraine’s Melania Tur posted the highest score of the junior qualification round, 23.800 with ribbon to advance to the final ahead of Yelyzaveta Zorkina (BLR) and Evelin Viktoria Kocsis (HUN). With ribbon Daria Atamanov (ISR) scored 21.500 to edge Dina Agisheva (BLR) and Stliana Nikolova (BUL) for the top spot.

On Thursday competition will begin at Kyiv’s Palace of Sports for junior individuals and senior groups & individuals. It’s the second time Ukraine will host the Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships!

23 Federations are travelling to Ukraine to challenge for the continental titles. A total of 115 gymnasts are scheduled to compete: 24 senior individuals, 6 senior groups and 57 junior gymnasts.

Who to watch?

With the absence of Russia, the interesting battle for the senior all-around medals will be between stars like Azerbaijan’s talents Arzu Jalilova and Zohra Aghamirova, Belarussian prodigies Alina Harnasko and Anastasia Salos, Bulgarian leading ladies Katrin Taseva and Boryana Kaleyn, Israeli stars Nicol Zelikman and Linoy Ashram while the host nation’s hopes rest on Viktoria Onoprienko and Yeva Meleshchuk.

The senior group competition will feature 6 groups: Azerbaijan, Estonia, France, Israel, Turkey and host Ukraine. The future stars will start in the junior individual competition.

Competition format

Last year, the top 24 gymnasts (max. 2 per country) qualified a spot for their country in this year’s all-around final. Non-qualified countries were given the option to compete with 1 gymnast, originally to get a chance to secure Olympic qualification. Due to covid-19, the Olympic qualification process was moved to next year’s event but these gymnasts are still offered the opportunity to compete.

The senior groups will battle for all-around, team (together with junior individuals) and apparatus glory. The junior individuals will perform their 4 routines in qualification for a chance to reach the apparatus finals.

The gymnastics competition at the 2^nd edition of the European Games starts tomorrow in the Belarussian capital Minsk. The Olympic discipline of rhythmic gymnastics will compete together with the non-Olympic acrobatic gymnastics.

52 women will compete in the rhythmic competition: 8 groups and 12 individuals are on the roster. Eight mixed pairs and eights women’s groups will compete in acrobatic gymnastics.

Competition format

Rhythmic individuals: 12 gymnasts (max. 1 per country) will compete in the qualifications which also serves as all-around final: the gymnast with the highest combined score of all 4 apparatus, wins the all-around title. With each apparatus the top 6 gymnasts advance to the apparatus finals.

Rhythmic groups: 8 groups (max. 1 per country) present 2 exercises (5 balls and 2 pairs of clubs + 3 hoops) in the apparatus finals. The combined score of these exercises will determine the all-around ranking.

Acrobatics: both mixed pairs and women’s groups present 2 exercises on Saturday: 1 balance and 1 dynamic. The results determine the medallists for each category. On Sunday the gymnasts perform their combined routine. This score will determine the all-around ranking.

Who to watch

Rhythmic Gymnastics

Reigning World all-around Champion Dina Averina leads the field. She will face competition from, among others, Ukraine’s Vlada Nikolchenko, Italy’s Alexandra Agiurgiuculese, Bulgaria’s Katrin Taseva, Israel’s Linoy Ashram, Georgia’s Salome Pazhava, Azerbaijan’s Zohra Aghamirova and the star of Minsk Katsiaryna Halkina. The groups represent Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Spain, Estonia, Italy, Russia and Ukraine.

Acrobatic Gymnastics

Eight mixed pairs and eights women’s groups will compete in Minsk, headlined by local heroes Veranika Nabokina, Julia Ivonchyk and Karina Sandovich and the mixed pair of Volha Melnik and Artur Beliakou. World Cup series winners Kirill Startsev and Viktoria Aksenova will aim to follow in the footsteps of Marina Chernova and Georgiy Pataraya to bring the European Games titles for mixed pairs back to Russia.

333 junior and senior gymnasts from 22 countries will compete. Headlined by European Champions Daniel Bali (HUN) and Belen Guillemot (ESP) and World Champions Michela Castoldi and Davide Donati (ITA), the participants’ field is a great mix of experienced competitors and rising stars with most notably Turkey’s Mehmet Ersos and Ayse Begum Onbasi making their senior debut. Russia’s Daria Tikhonova, the 2017 junior European Champion in mixed pairs and vice-European Champion individually, is the most experienced junior competitor.

The juniors compete in 5 categories: individual men (IM), individual women (IW), mixed pairs (MP), trios (TR) and groups (GR) while the seniors also add Aero Dance (AD) to their programme. The Aero Step category did not have enough participants so will be performed out of competition.

The qualifications for juniors (Friday) and seniors (Saturday) determine the team standing and the finalists. The top 8 of IW, IM, MP, TR and GR advance to the final with a maximum of 2 per country except groups where only 1 per country can qualify. The top 6 of AD advance to the final, maximum 1 per federation.

The team ranking list will be established by adding the 4 best rankings obtained during the qualifications in the following categories: Individual Men or Individual Women, Mixed pairs, Trios and Groups. The Federation with the lowest number of points is declared Team European Champion.

IsraelOn Thursday competition will begin at Baku’s fantastic National Gymnastics Arena for junior groups and senior individuals. It’s the fourth time Azerbaijan will host the Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships!

35 Federations are travelling to Azerbaijan to challenge for the continental titles. A total of 196 gymnasts are scheduled to compete: 81 senior individuals and 115 gymnasts form junior groups.

Who to watch?

Top names are counting on your support in Baku: Russia is sending its top trio, Dina and Arina Averina and Aleksandra Soldatova; Ekaterina Halkina, Anastasia Salos and Alina Harnasko will represent Belarus; Israel is represented by Linoy Ashram and Nicol Zelikman; Bulgaria counts on Katrin Taseva, Neviana Vladinova and Boryana Kaleyn; Alexandra Agiurgiuculese and Milena Baldassarri fly under the Italian flag; Ukraine boosts young rising stars Vlada Nikolchenko and Viktoria Onoprienko; while Azerbaijan’s Veronika Hudis and Zohra Aghamirova compete in front of their home crowd.

Of course, many more gymnasts are looking to excel in Baku and we wish every single gymnast loads of success.

Competition format

This European Championships is for junior groups and senior individuals. The first three days are qualification for both categories according to the draw of the starting order and the combined scores will determine the team rankings.

On Thursday, the junior groups present their exercise with 5 hoops. On Friday, the senior individuals complete their hoop and ball routines. On Saturday, the junior groups present their exercise with 5 ribbons. The senior individuals compete with clubs and ribbon.

The best 8 gymnasts per apparatus and the 8 best groups qualify for the event finals which will be held on Sunday. For the individuals there is a limit of 2 gymnasts per country per apparatus. The top 24 individuals in the all-around guarantee their country a starting place at next year’s European Championships.

On Sunday all apparatus finals are held.

On Wednesday, the much-anticipated Artistic Gymnastics Europeans commence. With the majority of the Olympic tickets being distributed at the World Championships in October, these Europeans provide a big test for our gymnasts.

Who to watch?

Over 150 male and 100 female gymnasts from respectively 38 and 36 countries are getting ready to compete in the Netto Arena in the 8^th Individual Artistic Gymnastics European Championships in Szczecin (POL)!

In the women’s competition 2017 European Champion Ellie Downie, Great Britain’s first European all-around Champion, will look to defend her crown while France’s Melanie de Jesus dos Santos won the floor title in Glasgow last August. Russia’s Angelina Melnikova won floor in 2017 and clinched several medals at Glasgow 2018. Her teammate, vault specialist and former European and World Champion, Maria Paseka is returning to competition after having back surgery in December 2017. The Netherlands’ Eythora Thorsdottir is back again as well, looking to continue on the good vibes of the 2017 Europeans where she won two medals as is France’s Coline Devillard, victorious on vault in 2017. Italy is sending 4 of the 5 gymnasts of last year’s extremely successful junior team: Giorgia Villa, Elisa Iorio and twins Asia and Alice D’Amato. Other first-year seniors looking to make a name for themselves are Anastasia Bachynska (UKR), Amelie Morgan (GBR), Emma Slevin (IRL) among others.

On the men’s side, a truly spectacular field of champions will be representing their country. Ukraine’s Oleg Verniaiev, 2015 and 2017 European all-around Champion, is coming back from surgery, having been added last-minute to the team to compete on pommel horse and parallel bars. Also present is the reigning World all-around Champion Artur Dalaloyan (RUS) and his teammate Nikita Nagornyy who recently won 6 out of the 7 available individual national titles. Some of the biggest names fighting for glory are three-time World and former Olympic Champion on high bar Epke Zonderland (NED), the 2018 high bar European Champion from Switzerland Oliver Hegi, defending floor Champion Dominick Cunningham (GBR) and his teammates double Olympic Champion Max Whitlock and rings master Courtney Tulloch, 2016 pommel horse Champion Harutyun Merdinyan (ARM), vault and rings specialist Igor Radivilov (UKR), European Games floor winner Rayderley Zapata (ESP) and his fellow gold medallist on pommel horse Saso Bertoncelj (SLO), France’s rings powerhouse Samir Ait Said, 2017 high bar World Champion Tin Srbic (CRO), Vice-Olympic all-around champion Marcel Nguyen (GER), Israeli specialists Artem Dolgopyat, Aleksandr Shatilov and Andrey Medvedev, Romanian superstar Marian Dragulescu, Turkish contenders Ferhat Arican, Ahmet Onder and Ibrahim Colak; and the Russians Vladyslav Poliashov, Dmitriy Lankin and Denis Ablyazin.

The stars for the home crowd will surely be Marta Pihan-Kulesza and her husband Roman Kulesza, who live and train in Szczecin.

Competition format

This is an individual Championships for seniors only so no team competition will be held. The top 24 gymnasts after qualifications, with a limit of 2 per country, advance to Friday’s all-around finals. The best 8 per apparatus qualify for the event finals, again with a limit of 2 gymnasts per country per apparatus.

Men: Each country can send a maximum of 6 gymnasts and 4 can compete per apparatus.

Women: Each country can send a maximum of 4 gymnasts and all 4 are allowed to compete per apparatus.

European Games qualification

These Europeans also serve as the second and last qualification moment for the 2nd European Games. Last year, the 6 best teams qualified two non-nominative places. This year, the 18 best placed in the all-around qualification will qualify one nominative place (if not qualified with team) and the three best placed athletes per apparatus final secure their place. There is a maximum of 3 athletes per NOC. Any country that qualified more than 3 athletes can choose which of the qualifiers to send.
