During its second day meeting, the UEG Executive Committee reviewed its financial situation. Accounts and budgets fully meet the expectations planned. "The UEG shows a stable situation, through careful management of its affairs, its faithful partners and the success of its recent competitions" said, confident, President George Guelzec (FRA).

Delegates then considered the work of the Working Group "Strategy" dedicated to the gymnastics of tomorrow and after tomorrow. The highly anticipated findings will be presented to Congress in Bratislava (SVK) in November. On this occasion, the group will deliver its recommendations and will invite delegates from the 48 member federations of the UEG to follow the paths allowing the gymnastics events and its content, to meet the expectations of the media and spectators of the cycles 2020 and 2024. "Our today’s decisions will have to be statutorily confirmed by the legislative bodies concerned. Our texts and regulations have to be accepted and validated. That takes time. To reform our structures, it is today that we must act! " underlined the President of the UEG.

Before concluding its autumn session, the Executive has designated the cities which will host the 2017 European Championships in acrobatic and aerobic gymnastics, respectively Rzeszow (POL) and Rimini (ITA).

Competition format

18 National Federations will be represented in 2 age categories: juniors (13 – 19) and seniors (15+). Each formation can perform 1 balance and 1 dynamic routine during the qualifications on Thursday and Friday. The top 6 (top 8 for junior women’s group) per exercise advance to the balance and dynamic finals while the two scores combined determine the top 6 (top 8 for junior women’s group) who will advance to the all-around final where they have to perform a combined exercise. Only 1 formation per country can advance to finals. In the all-around final the score of the combined exercise will be added to the sum of the balance and dynamic exercises to determine the medal winners. In individual finals the competition starts from zero so the pairs / groups with the highest score will be European Champions.

Who to watch?

Several top gymnasts headline the event: European Games winners like the Russian mixed pair Marina Chernova and Georgiy Pataraya, and the Belgian women’s group, Julie Van Gelder, Ineke Van Schoor and Kaat Dumarey. The silver and bronze medallist women’s groups from Baku, Russia and Belarus, will also be present, promising a high-level battle for gold. Triple silver medallists from the European Games, the Belgian mixed pair Yana Vastavel and Solano Cassamajor, will not participate. Cassamajor retired from competitive gymnastics after Baku and Vastavel injured her knee and leg recently and she’ll be out for several months. The British mixed pair Ryan Bartlett and Hannah Baughn, triple bronze medallists in Baku, are more than capable of rising in the rankings and are definitely one to watch in Riesa. For the women’s and men’s pairs all eyes are on Russia, Great Britain and Belgium with Belarus and Ukraine ready step in. The men’s group from Israel is very talented and could reach the podium. Team GB is sending neither a women’s nor a men’s group this year.

It’s great to see Moldova back in competition, as well as the senior Swiss team who has been absent for a few years. Good luck to all competitors!

The Executive Committee of the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) will hold its statutory meeting in Lausanne on October 9 and 10. Important strategic choices feature on its agenda.

After the success of gymnastics at the first European Games, held last June in Baku (AZE), UEG President Georges Guelzec (FRA), will comment on the decisions made which led to a positive report. Satisfaction on the financial side as well, judged by the state of the accounts of 2015 and the budgetary planning for 2016. In the opinion of the Director herself, Kirsi Erofejeff-Engman (FIN), the UEG has stabilised its financial situation.

Calendar

The delegates are invited to comment on and arrange the last details of the organisation of UEG’s 26th Congress, to be held in November in Bratislava (SVK), and during which the conclusions of the Work Group dedicated to the gymnastics of tomorrow and the day after tomorrow will be unveiled.

These same delegates will also select the host city of the 27th UEG Congress in 2017. Four cities submitted their candidacy: Baku (AZE), Lugano (SUI), Reykjavik (ISL) and Split (CRO). All four were subjected to a preliminary visit. The EC will also decide on the attribution of the 2017 European Championships in Aerobic and Acrobatic Gymnastics.

Uncertainty

The 7th European Individual Artistic Gymnastics Championships in 2017, awarded to Bucharest (ROU), are also a crucial subject on the agenda. In fact, the Romanian Federation reported a serious delay in the construction project of a new sports complex in the capital.  In the letter addressed to the UEG, owner of the event, an alternative was formulated: organise the competitions in the city of Cluj-Napoca (ROU), situated 450 km from the capital.

The President of the UEG and its Director recently visited Romania to evaluate the situation. The Executive Committee will need to decide between keeping the Romanian candidacy and risk a relocation to Cluj-Napoca if the foreseen venue is not ready by the deadline, or reconsider the offer of the Danish organisers in Arhus (DEN), who presented their candidacy to the Executive Committee in January of this year in Lausanne.

When making its decision the Executive Committee will need to take into account that the European Championships in Artistic Gymnastics remains the most prestigious and most important event in the UEG’s range. The 2015 edition, held in Montpellier (FRA), was an immense success, both because of the gymnastics shown and its popularity. The 2016 edition, entrusted to the Swiss Gymnastics Federation and the city of Bern, will without a doubt confirm this year’s numbers.

Preview of the 8^th European Age Group Competitions in Acrobatic Gymnastics

Competition format

Two age groups will compete in Riesa: 11 – 16 and 12 – 18. In both categories inscriptions were open in the following categories: women’s pair, men’s pair, mixed pair, women’s group and men’s group. In the 11 – 16 age group unfortunately only 2 men’s group registered. They will compete out of competition. All participants need to show a balance and a dynamic exercise. On Friday 25 September both age groups will perform 1 exercise while they will perform the other exercise on Saturday 26 September. The combined total will determine who advances to the finals.

The top 8 –limited to 1 per federation in each category per age group- advance to the finals on Sunday 27 September where everyone will start from zero. The 11 – 16 age group will perform a set routine: balance for women’s pairs, men’s pairs and men’s groups; dynamic for mixed pairs and women’s groups. Age group 12 – 18 has to perform a combined exercise. The highest three scores are awarded the medals during the ceremony following the final. Tie break rules apply according to FIG regulations.

Who to watch?

Europe’s big nations in Acrobatic gymnastics -the top 3 of the 2014 World Championships: Russia, Great Britain and Belgium are expected to battle for the medals in the Age Group competitions. But never count out Belarus and Ukraine, while host nation Germany is also aiming for medals with their women’s pair 11 - 16 Lilly Kutta and Camille Herrmann.

A wide number of National Federations will be represented, 27 in total, from Azerbaijian & Georgia over Estonia and Finland to Italy and Moldova. We are very glad to welcome back Greece and Lithuania!

The UEG Work Group Strategy issues its first conclusions

Lausanne (SUI), March 10^th, 2016: The Work Group Strategy of the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) met in Lausanne on March 9^th, under the presidency of Georges Guelzec (FRA). The Group, created in November 2014, is charged to explore all leads that gymnastics must take tomorrow and the day after tomorrow to assure its development and its stability. Its conclusions will be submitted for approval to the UEG General Assembly in December 2017 in Split (CRO). Governance, finance, sport and communication are the four pillars taken into account for the reflections of the Group.

After having used the time dedicated to discussions, the Group has reached its first conclusions which will be submitted to the next Executive Committee in July. Among them, and as far as the event is in the center of development in terms of visibility, revenues and image, it recommends in particular the creation – beginning with the next legislative period 2017-2021 – of a position dedicated exclusively to the management of European Championships. The Group will also propose to entrust key positions in the organisation of events to a pool of professionals – TV producers and coordinators, competition directors, scriptwriters, presenters, media management – that will be responsible to ensure the quality, technical level and consistency of UEG competitions.

On a different note and with a view to innovate and promote millions of amateur gymnasts who are active in a club on the continent, the Group continues its reflections on the organisation of a European Champions League of gymnastics clubs.

« The quality of our Championships goes through a management entrusted to professionals. The competences united in this pool will be made available to local organisers. A UEG event must be recognizable by the quality of its actors, the gymnasts and the venue, the animations, the welcome of the media, sponsors and the public. » declares the UEG President and continues « We assume the transformations which fall under the responsibility of our Union and propose today to the FIG those which have an impact on the regulations and competition formats of the cycle 2021-2024. We don’t have a minute to lose. »

A unifying and vibrant brand has been launched by the participating sports to promote the new European Championships which will be staged for the first time in Glasgow and Berlin in 2018.

The dynamic Mark of a Champion is the star-like logo representing the vision at the heart of the multi-sport championships brand – to create a must-attend, must-watch experience that elevates the status of European Champions.

The inspiring  shapes and colours of the logo - created in partnership by the sports, Host Cities Glasgow and Berlin and broadcast partner the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) - come together to represent the defining moments that create champions.

The logo was revealed today at an event in Glasgow attended by Great Britain swimmer Ross Murdoch. Ross spoke of his “golden moment” when he won Commonwealth Games gold in the pool in 2014 in Glasgow and said he couldn’t wait for the prospect of another chance to be a champion as part of a multi-sport event in front of a home crowd.

The multi-sport event in 2018 will bring together the existing European Championships of athletics, aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, rowing and triathlon, and also introduces a new golf team championship onto the European stage.

This new sporting partnership will create a strong event on the world stage every four years, attracting a projected television audience of around 1.03 billion and an even wider audience via multiple digital and radio platforms.

Around 1500 athletes will compete in Berlin through 7-12 August as part of the European Athletics Championships, while approximately 3025 athletes will visit Scotland for the other six events between 1 – 12 August.

As part of the brand development process, the name of the event has been shortened from the previous working title of 'European Sports Championships' to the ‘European Championships'.

Each sport will also unveil their own event logos in the coming months, inspired by the Mark of a Champion.

Ross Murdoch said: “Every athlete wants to compete at the highest level and that is exactly what the European Championships is all about. “Multi-sport events bring out the best in athletes and also in the fans who love getting behind their nation. The moment I won gold at the Commonwealth Games will live with me forever.”

European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen, co-chair of the 2018 European Championships Board said: “The launch of this impressive brand is the starting gun for a European Championships concept that will help elevate the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships to a scale we have never seen before. In Berlin we have a fantastic host city for our Championships, and in the German athletics federation, we have a committed partner who have produced a great generation of athletes. We are all committed to delivering the best-ever European Athletics Championships.”

Fellow co-chair Paolo Barelli, President of the Ligue Européenne de Natation (European Aquatics), said:  “This brand encapsulates everything we want to see in 2018 which will be an inspiring and ambitious event that showcases the prestigious history of the European championships of all our sports and provides us with a fresh and dynamic stage on which to elevate our champions.”

Jamie Hepburn, Scottish Government Minister for Sport, said: “I’m delighted that the Scottish Government has been able to support the 2018 European Championships. This is a totally new concept in European sport, so it’s tremendous that we can be at the forefront of that, welcoming all these world class athletes to Glasgow, and other venues across Scotland. We have a growing reputation when it comes to hosting major events like this, and I’m sure the people of Scotland will embrace these championships as only they can.”

Councillor Frank McAveety, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “I am delighted that Glasgow’s vibrant personality shines through this new brand. We have worked together with these amazing sports to create something that reflects all of our values by embracing our ambition, our strength in unity and our ongoing journey to provide opportunities for all of our citizens through the power of sport and culture.”

Senator Frank Henkel, City of Berlin, said: “Berlin is very proud to be host of the 2018 European Athletics Championships. More than 1,500 athletes from 50 countries will be welcome to the famous Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Today we are really pleased to see the unveiling of the umbrella brand for the European Championships of which we are part. Our city is well underway in its preparations for the European Athletics Championships, and our own Berlin 2018 mark will be unveiled soon.”

Using vibrant and dynamic shapes and colours it encapsulates the essence of the brand – the defining moments that create Champions. The logo represents ‘the moment’, the event tagline.

The colours have been chosen for their vibrancy and their association to the sports and host cities.

Aligning the Mark consistently at 30˚angles creates natural leading lines to the eye and achieves balance.

The wordmark typeface has been hand crafted to encapsulate a competitive edge represented by the unique and ownable cuts in the lettering and the inclusion of the star-like shape.

The initial working title, ‘European Sports Championships’, has been changed to the official name of the event, ‘European Championships’.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

1.   The 2018 European Championships will be staged by the European Federations and the Host Cities of Glasgow and Berlin.

2.   The Glasgow 2018 event will be held between 1st and 12th August and the European Athletics Championships will be between 7th and 12th August in Berlin.

3.   The European Broadcast Union (EBU), the umbrella body for Europe free-to-air channels, will be the broadcast partner for the Championships. The event is expected to generate a television audience of around 1.03 billion with many more viewers across multiple digital platforms.

4.   Around 3025 athletes will travel to Scotland as part of a total delegation of around 8500 including officials, media and others. A further 1500 athletes will compete in Berlin.

5.   Berlin's Olympic Stadium will be the venue for the European Athletics Championships with the road races and race walking events held throughout the city.

6.   The European Aquatic Championships will take place at Glasgow's Tollcross International Swimming Centre, with diving and synchronised swimming taking place at Edinburgh's Royal Commonwealth Pool and open water swimming being staged at Loch Lomond.

7.   Four European Cycling Championships will be staged in Glasgow. Track, Road, Mountain Bike and BMX will attract 650 of Europe’s top names to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, the Cathkin Braes Mountain Bike Trails, the streets of Glasgow and a new world championship and Olympic standard BMX track to be built in the Knightswood area of the city.

8.   The European Golf Team Championships will take place at the Gleneagles PGA Centenary Course.

9.   The European Artistic Gymnastics Men’s and Women’s Championships will be staged at The SSE Hydro, the venue for the 2015 FIG World Gymnastics Championships.

10. The European Championships for both Rowing and Triathlon will both be staged at Strathclyde Country Park in North Lanarkshire.

The General Assembly will be followed by the election of the new authorities

All 50 member Federations are expected to be present at the UEG’s 27^th Congress which is due to start on Friday in the Croatian coastal town of Split.

On Friday the General Assembly will discuss, among other things, the reports of each Technical Committee, presented by their respective presidents, the budget including the profit and loss accounts of the last two years plus a forecast for 2018 and the proposed changes to the UEG statutes.

On Saturday, the elections will be held. Outgoing President Georges Guelzec (FRA), who has led the UEG since 2009, is bidding farewell to the UEG. To succeed him as the 5^th President of the UEG, two candidates stepped forward: Azerbaijan’s Farid Gayibov, currently UEG Vice-President and Secretary-General of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, and Slovenia’s Edvard Kolar, President of the Management Board of the Slovenian Sports Lottery. Also subject to voting: the Executive Committee, Control Authorities and the Technical Committee presidents. The newly elected Executive Committee will then nominate the Technical Committee members.

Preview of the 2018 Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships in Guadalajara (ESP)

The Royal Spanish Gymnastics Federation has a wealth of experience, having already hosted in Guadalajara’s Palacio Multiusos earlier this month a World Cup stage and a junior international trophy. Now it’s time for the big challenge: the 2018 Rhythmic Europeans!

40 National Federations will travel to Spain to challenge for the European titles. A total of 224 gymnasts are scheduled to compete, 24 senior individuals, 107 gymnasts from senior groups and 93 junior gymnasts.

Who to watch?

In the senior competition new all-around champions will be crowned. Individually, World Champion Dina Averina will take on a tough challenge from her twin sister Arina, and from Israel’s Linoy Ashram who has been on fire this season. Others to keep your eye on are Italy’s Milena Baldassarri and Alexandra Agiurgiuculese, Belarussians Anastasia Salos and Katsiaryna Halkina, Bulgarians Neviana Vladinova and Katrin Taseva.

For the senior groups, it will be the first continental competition in 2 years. A lot has changed since then, especially the open-ended difficulty scoring which has seen the scores skyrocket! Bulgaria posted the highest D-score so far: a 14.000! Italy and Russia have also impressed. The battle will be exciting.

In the juniors we look for to see the next stars emerge. Russia is sending a strong team that features 2016 junior European Champion Polina Shmatko, Anastasia Sergeeva, Lala Kramarenko and Daria Trubnikova. Others to watch are the girls from Belarus, Ukraine, Italy and host nation Spain of course.

Competition format

This European Championships is for junior individuals, senior groups and the top 24 senior individuals of last year’s Europeans. The first two days are qualification for both junior individuals and senior groups. The combined scores will determine the team rankings.

On Friday, the junior individuals present their exercises with hoop and ball while the senior groups compete with 5 hoops. They start according to the draw.

On Saturday, the junior individuals present their exercises with clubs and ribbon. The senior groups compete with 2 ropes and 3 balls. They start according to the team results of day 1.

The best 8 gymnasts per apparatus and the 8 best groups per routine qualify for the event finals which will be held on Sunday. There is a limit of 1 gymnast per country per final.

Preview of the 26th European Championships in Trampoline, Double Mini-Trampoline and Tumbling

From Thursday 12 till Sunday 15 April, Europe’s best junior and senior athletes meet in the Azerbaijani capital Baku to compete against themselves and each other for the European titles.

420 gymnasts from 25 federations have registered. Both junior and senior competitions will be held in Individual and Synchronised Trampoline, Double Mini-Trampoline and Tumbling.

Who to watch?

Individual Trampoline: Defending European and reigning Olympic Champion Uladzislau Hancharou and his wife Hanna Hancharova (formerly better known as 2014 European Champion Hanna Harchonak!) will be among the ones to beat in Baku. They will face tough competition from Russia that is sending a star-studded team including Vice-European Champion Dmitriy Ushakov, Mikhail Melnik, Sergey Azarian and defending women’s European Champion Yana Pavlova. Great Britain can count on the experience of Kat Driscoll, who is competing in an impressive 8^th senior Europeans, Luke Strong, Nathan Bailey and 2014 junior European and World Champion Izzy Songhurst. France’s Sébastien Martiny and Allan Morante, fresh off victory at the Dutch Open, aim for the final as does Azerbaijan’s Ilya Grishunin. In the women’s competition, we look for to seeing the experienced Olympians Portugal’s Ana Rente, Ukraine’s Natalia Moskvina and Georgia’s Luba Golovina.

Synchronised Trampoline: World Champions Aleh Rabtsau and Uladzislau Hancharou will look to take the European gold as well, a title Hancharou won in 2016 with Mikalai Kazak. The 2015 World bronze medallists Sébastien Martiny and Allan Morante will be one of the main challengers, together with Russia’s dynamic duo Andrey Yudin and Dmitriy Ushakov, Portugal’s Diogo Abreu and Diogo Ganchinho. Last year’s World Games silver medallist Mykola Prostorov of Ukraine is partnering with Artem Savchenko in Baku. Competition will be tight on the women’s side as well. Defending European Champions Marine Jurbert and Léa Labrousse (FRA) will be present, as will silver medallist Susana Kochesok (RUS) who will partner with Yana Pavlova, and bronze medallists Ana Rente and Beatriz Martins (POR). And there’s the duo Hanna Hancharova - Maria Makharynskaya to take into consideration too!

Double Mini-Trampoline: The ultimate star in DMT is of course Russia’s Mikhail Zalomin. The multiple European and World Champion also won the World Games last year and is looking to defend his title. Few gymnasts can rival Zalomin’s technique and difficult. His biggest rival? His teammate Aleksander Odintsov and Spain’s daredevil Daniel Perez. Sweden’s Lina Sjoeberg won the European title two years ago in Valladolid (ESP). Her insane difficulty has broken many records and she doesn’t plan to stop yet! Her competition will mainly come from Great Britain’s Kirsty Way and Russians Polina Troianova.

Tumbling: Azerbaijan’s high hopes are set on Mikhail Malkin, the 2017 Age Group World Champion. Simply to reach the final will be a challenge in this strong field that also features 2016 junior Champion Rasmus Steffensen and Danish teammate Anders Wesch, Great Britain’s Greg Townley, Elliott Browne, Kallum Mulhall and Kristof Willerton and Russians Aleksandr Lisitsyn, Maksim Shlyakin, Grigory Noskov and Vadim Afanasev. Living legend Anna Korobeynikova, who took her first World title with the Russian team back in 1998, aims to defend her European title in Baku. Also going for the medals are Belgium’s Tachina Peeters, France’s Marie Deloge, British ladies Lucie Colebeck and Rachel Davies and Russia’s Viktoria Danilenko.

Competition format

The 26^th European Championships in Trampoline, Double Mini-Trampoline and Tumbling will be run in the following 4 disciplines, for both juniors and seniors, men and women:

• Individual Trampoline
• Synchronised Trampoline
• Double Mini-Trampoline
• Tumbling

There will also be team events in three disciplines (trampoline individual, tumbling and double mini-trampoline) and in both categories (juniors and seniors) and genders (men and women). A total of 28 gold medals will be distributed: 14 for Junior and 14 for Senior.

The semifinal will be applied for Individual Trampoline seniors and juniors only. The top 24 gymnasts from qualifications advance to semifinals, with a limit of 3 gymnasts per Federation. All gymnasts will start the semifinal with a score of zero.

Participation in the Finals:

• The top 8 gymnasts per discipline and age category, men and women (maximum 2 per NF)
• The top 8 synchro pairs per age category, men and women (maximum 1 per NF)
• The top 5 teams in TRA individual, DMT and TUM per age category, men and women (4 gymnasts per team, 3 best scores will be counted).

All gymnasts, pairs and teams will start Finals with a score of zero.

These Championships will also be the only qualifying moment for the following 2 events:

• 2018 Youth Olympic Games
• 2019 European Games

Preview of the 2017 European Championships in Acrobatic Gymnastics in Rzeszow (POL)

Having just hosted the European Age Group competitions, Rzeszow got a brilliant rehearsal for this week’s European Championships for juniors and seniors. The gymnasts will have a well-prepared and well-trained team welcoming them and ensuring their needs are met.

In the junior category 13 Federations will compete with 7 Women’s Pairs, 10 Men’s Pairs, 19 Mixed Pairs, 16 Women’s Groups and 3 Men’s Groups. 12 Federations are sending seniors: 6 Women’s Pairs, 9 Men’s Pairs, 10 Mixed Pairs, 10 Women’s Groups and 7 Men’s Groups.

Who to watch?

The entry list in the seniors competition is nothing less than impressive: Russian stars Marina Chernova and Georgiy Pataraya are joined by teammates Nikolay Suprunov, Igor Mishev, Daria Guryeva and Daria Kalinina, Belgium’s Noémie Lammertyn and Lore Vanden Berghe, Germany’s first ever World Games Champions Tim Sebastian and Mikhail Kraft, … Israel’s triple European senior champions men’s group will face tough competition from the junior Champions from Great Britain who claimed World Games gold just recently.

The stars will definitely need to watch their back as there are many talented up-and-coming pairs and groups eager to dethrone the champions!

In the junior competition, the biggest battle is expected in the mixed pair’s competition where several former European medallists like Azerbaijan’s Aghasif Rahimov and Nurjan Jabbarli, Great Britain’s Finlay Cochrane and Kirsten Owen and Russia’s Aleksandra Balandina and Valeri Tukhashvili.

Competition format

All pairs and groups are required to perform two exercise in qualification: a balance and a dynamic routine of which the combined score will determine the all-around finalists. The top 8 advance to the all-around final, or the top 6 if there are less than 12 participants, with a limit to 1 per country. In the final the combined routine will be performed. The top 8 per exercise also advance to the individual final.
