Preview of the 2017 Aerobic Gymnastics European Championships in Ancona (ITA)
On Friday competition will begin for the 21 participating Federations at Ancona’s Palaprometeo Liani Rossini. Europe’s best junior and senior gymnasts in Aerobic Gymnastics will battle for the continental titles. Held every two years, these Championships are the first under the new FIG Code of Points, valid from 2017 to 2020. Several stars including Spain’s mixed pair Sara Moreno and Vicente Lli and Hungary’s Dora Hegyi, have indicated that Ancona will be their last competition so the desire to finish on a high note is strong.
Who to watch?
The participants’ list is impressive: defending European Champions, World Champions, European and World Games Champions and World Cup series winners … an extremely strong field of experienced gymnasts will battle for the titles in Ancona! Headlined by Spain’s mixed pair Sara Moreno and Vicente Lli, Italian superstars Michela Castoldi and Davide Donati and Hungarians Daniel Bali and Dora Hegyi, the home crowd will put the pressure on the Italian team as they face stiff competition from Romania, Hungary, Russia and Spain. We’ll also see 2015 junior European Champions Marcello Patteri (ITA), Louise Mesle, Florian Bugalho and Tom Jourdan (FRA) competing in the senior ranks.
In the junior competition, 19 federations are sending gymnasts. 2015 junior Champion Francesca Morar (ROU) is making her return in the individual category and in the mixed pair where she won the title 2 years ago. Italy’s Davide Nacci will look to improve on his silver in the individual men competition while successfully defending the title he won as a member of the trio.
Competition format
These European Championships are for juniors (15 to 17 years old) and seniors (18+). The juniors compete in 5 categories: individual men (IM), individual women (IW), mixed pairs (MP), trios (TR) and groups (GR) while the seniors also add Aero Dance (AD) and Aero Step (AS) to their programme.
The qualifications for juniors (Friday) and seniors (Saturday) determine the team standing and the finalists. The top 8 of IW, IM, MP, TR and GR advance to the final with a maximum of 2 per country except groups where only 1 per country can qualify. The top 6 of AS and AD advance to the final, maximum 1 per federation.
The team ranking list will be established by adding the 4 best rankings obtained during the qualifications in the following categories: Individual Men or Individual Women, Mixed pairs, Trios and Groups. The Federation with the lowest number of points is declared Team European Champion.
