Preview of the 2017 European Age Group Competitions in Acrobatic Gymnastics in Rzeszow (POL)

The Polish city of Rzeszow is the center of the Acrobatics world for the coming two weeks as it hosts the European Age Group competitions and the junior and senior European Championships. This Friday, the Age Group competitions start.

Gymnasts will compete in either the 11 to 16 or the 12 to 18 age group. 24 National Federations have registered for the 11 – 16, featuring 30 Women’s Pairs, 10 Men’s Pairs, 16 Mixed Pairs, 32 Women’s Groups and 4 Men’s Groups. In the 12 – 18 category, 20 National Federations will participate with a total of 21 Women’s Pairs, 10 Men’s Pairs, 17 Mixed Pairs, 23 Women’s Groups and 9 Men’s Groups.

Who to watch?

The most experienced age group gymnast is Belgium’s Yana Vastavel who partnered with Solano Cassamajor to take three silver medals at the 2015 European Games in Baku (AZE). She now competes as a member of a women’s group, looking to pass on her experience to her teammates. Other familiar names are Olivia Procter (GBR) who won the silver medal in the 11 – 16 age group at previous European Age Group Competitions in Riesa (GER) and the Portuguese men’s group featuring Miguel Silva, Henrique Silva, Joao Pereira and Henrique Piqueiro who will look to improve on the bronze medal won two years ago.

Always worth keeping your eye out for are the gymnasts from nations with a strong acrobatic tradition like Russia, Great Britain, Ukraine, Belarus, Belgium, Portugal and Israel.

Competition format

All pairs and groups are required to perform two exercise in qualification: a balance and a dynamic routine. The combined score will determine the finalists as the top 6 (less than 12 participants) or top 10 (more than 12 participants), with a limit to 1 per country, advance to Sunday’s final.

The finalists in the 11 – 16 age group perform either their balance (mixed pairs and women’s groups) or their dynamic (women’s pairs, men’s pairs and men’s groups) exercise again while the 12 – 18 finalists perform their combined routine.
